Considering the big picture of my global context, I wanted to learn more about the scale of this issue and really endeavour to understand what is going on, in order to be able to develop an effective and worthy future learning space for these children. What I learnt left me deeply saddened and astonished by the magnitude of this problem.
I will be the first to admit, I am not one to keep very up to date with world politics and although I was of course, aware of the war in Syria and the innocent civilians fleeing their homes, I'm ashamed to admit just how naive I was about the severity of this crisis. This refugee crisis is claiming to be the largest humanitarian crisis of the decade and it is estimated that it will take decades to ameliorate the living conditions of these refugees.
The problems facing the host countries in regard to supporting the Syrian refugees are extensive, with education being amongst the most important. Employment, health, and accomodation as well as just a need for a normalcy in life are all pressing concerns for the wellbeing of the Syrian people and although countries such as Lebanon Jordan and Turkey are trying to accomodate as best as they can but with 800 million dollars already spent and another 300 million needed to meet demand, they quite simply can’t keep up.
